UMTA provides opportunities for students to hone their musical skills by performing in competitions. These competitions are highly competitive and offer monetary awards.
The MTNA National Competitions are the most successful and prestigious student competitions in the country. Each year, thousands of students compete for top prizes and national recognition. The purpose of the Music Teachers National Association Performance competitions is to provide educational experiences for students and teachers and to recognize exceptionally talented young artists and their teachers in their pursuit of musical excellence.
Performance Evaluations are a great alternative for non-competitive students.
The MTNA Performance and Composition Competitions are held in the Fall each year. This is a highly competitive competition and should not be entered lightly. The entry fee is quite high and there are NO refunds once application has been made through the MTNA website. If you are not sure your student is qualified for this competition, please contact the competition chair.
**There is a $25 Teacher fee charged per student. This helps ensure students are not entered unless they are ready to perform and show up for their assigned performance times.**
The first round of UMTA/MTNA Performance/Composition Competitions is held on the state level. Winners proceed to the division level, where they submit their performance via digital means. The winners from the division go on to perform at the MTNA National Conference, competing to win national honors and a monetary award.
The UMTA Composition Competition has a much lower entry fee than the MTNA competition. This is done to give as many students as possible the opportunity to experiment with composing, having their score judged, and receive comments back.
The Concerto Competitions are held on the state level, and have only one round of competitions. A financial award is offered the winners of this competition. Please select a competition below to see more details.
